Episode 27: Is Our Understanding of Who Owns Risk Driving CISOs to the Edge?
On this episode, Steve speaks to Gary Hayslip, US Navy veteran, author of The CISO Desk Reference Guide, and CISO at SoftBank Investment Advisers. Gary and Steve talk about the challenges military personnel face when transitioning into the business world, and how our understanding of risk ownership might be negatively impacting CISOs in the long run.
The Challenges Military Veterans Face when Transitioning “Out of Service”
Having served in the military for however many years, enlisted personnel ending their tour receive some standard training on how to transition to civilian life. While these classes teach vets the basics, like how to format resumes, they don’t provide the amount of support a veteran needs to adjust to an entirely new life.
When you’re in the military, everything is organized and planned out for you, from your day to your week, to your month, to your year. You always understand what you need to do, and what path to follow. That changes when your tour ends, whether it’s after four years or 20.
Gary and Steve also hit on critical issues like:
- How employers can better empower veterans
- Overcoming anxiety when transitioning into a new role
- The AAR process
- Businesses that have a mission vs those that have a mission statement
- Effective data breach remediation and,
- Building an inclusive work culture
