As Exabeam’s representative to the Institute for Critical Infrastructure Technology (ICIT), I’d like to highlight the recent legislative brief entitled “Hacking Healthcare in 2016: Lessons the Healthcare Industry can Learn from the OPM Breach.” The paper provides an analysis of the impact that cybercrime can have on the healthcare sector, as well as approaches to improve security and resiliency. For those who don’t work in the federal sector, the OPM breach has had considerable impact and attention, and many are concerned that another such breach may happen.

The paper covers topics such as: who has an interest in attacking healthcare payers and providers, how the industry has changed and how it might change in the future. Certainly this is an industry that is paying attention to the increase in attacks, given the level of sensitive data it manages, and how that will likely grow as we move to connected devices and electronic records.

The healthcare industry is one of fast change and interconnected people and organizations. As such, it can be difficult to detect potentially risky activity, to understand who exactly is doing that activity, and whether it requires further scrutiny. In some ways, healthcare payers and providers are at greater risk of breach than any other industry, for these firms handle not only health information but also payment and other PII. Breaching a provider can produce a great deal of sensitive information.

At Exabeam, we believe that security intelligence, delivered through user behavior analytics, can provide significant value in both the detection of and response to attacks. We’re working with some of the leading players in the industry and helping them detect problems as well as remain in compliance with regulations and internal policies. One firm recently told us “we thought your solution was just for IT, but after you helped us answer the auditors’ questions, even our CEO sees the value now.”
