6 Benefits of SIEM in the Cloud

Guide

Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) solutions have been around for more than 20 years in various incarnations. In the original SIEM models, the operational back end was entirely on-premises from the databases to the front-end applications, including user interfaces, case management features, and more. Whether home-grown SIEM or licensed SIEM from a vendor, there were always considerations from rack space to data storage costs, as well as other operational overhead.

Other historic challenges involved SOC evolution, as organizations wanted to monitor more logs, security tool output, and usage throughout their organization. Submitting a request to vendors took weeks (in the best scenario) and months (more common) to get a new log parser or feed out of their development teams.

Finally, in an era when organizations are expanding, merging, and acquiring other organizations, networking a series of on-premises SIEMs is not a minor undertaking. In the same way that business transformation initiatives embrace cloud computing and Software as a Service (SaaS), cloud-hosted SIEMs represent the logical next step where the third-party platform or infrastructure owns most of the technology burden.
