Three university-level students awarded scholarships following national competition

FOSTER CITY, Calif., Oct. 1, 2020Exabeam, the Smarter SIEM™ company, today announced it has awarded cybersecurity scholarships to a diverse group of three university-level students, following a competition that attracted more than 50 submissions from across the United States. The Exabeam Cybersecurity Scholarship Program supports a broader, value-based initiative known as the Exabeam Cares program, a philanthropic effort focused on education, giving back to the community and closing the cybersecurity skills gap. This year’s winners span international students from countries like Venezuela to first- and second-generation American citizens.

According to Exabeam’s 2020 State of the SOC Report, 40% of organizations still struggle with SOC staff shortages and finding qualified people to fill the security talent gap. In light of these prominent trends, and as a security information and event management (SIEM) and user and entity behavior analytics (UEBA) market leader, Exabeam is passionate about cybersecurity and supporting the next generation of professionals, from all backgrounds, pursuing their education followed by a career in the industry.

One of the winners stated, “The importance of diversity in technology cannot be understated. The cybersecurity industry and the various fields of information technology suffer from this problem. There is not enough ethnic, gender and socioeconomic diversity among the workers in these fields, which can lead to very narrow perspectives in the corporations within these industries. More diversity results in more innovative products and services that better serve society. I applaud Exabeam’s initiatives to bring attention to the issue, especially in such a critical field as cybersecurity. It is my hope that in the future, the workers in technology will be as diverse as the [population of the] United States.”

With the cybersecurity landscape evolving and cyberthreats becoming more complex and difficult to detect, the Exabeam judging panel looked for students who demonstrated passion for driving innovative solutions and addressing the cybersecurity challenges of the future. Entries were scored based on originality, creativity and grade point average (GPA), with students asked to consider issues such as election security, the privacy of social media platforms and generational differences in personal online security.

“The three students who have been awarded scholarships exceeded our expectations and delivered outstanding submissions,” commented Nir Polak, CEO, Exabeam. “Empowering the next generation of cybersecurity leaders is a critical step in minimizing the cybersecurity talent gap. Even in the face of the pandemic, the industry is still seeing significant investment, public offerings and growth, so demand for skilled graduates and workers remains — and will continue to remain — high. We are thrilled to be playing a role in encouraging and supporting these up-and-coming security leaders and wish them all the best as they chart their futures.”
