Former Deputy CIO and CISO joins top cybersecurity experts to assess risks to the public sector

SAN MATEO, Calif., July 9, 2018 – Exabeam, the next-gen security information and event management company, today announced the appointment of U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) veteran, Steve Grewal, to its Federal Advisory Board. The board, established by Exabeam in 2016, is led by cybersecurity experts experienced in government sector, to assist agencies within the federal and state governments with handling modern cyberthreats. This includes improving the detection of or response to malicious threats to technology assets and systems.

Grewal previously served as the deputy chief information officer (CIO) for the GSA, where he led all IT responsibilities. In addition, he served as a senior advisor to the administrator, deputy administrator and other senior GSA officials on all technology matters. Prior to his appointment at GSA, Grewal served as acting CIO deputy CIO and chief technology officer (CTO) for the U.S. Department of Education (ED).

“The goal of our Federal Advisory Board is to help public sector organizations identify, navigate and safely mitigate a complicated web of persistent cyberthreats using best practices, thought-leadership and strong technology offerings,” said Nir Polak, Exabeam’s co-founder and CEO. “As a former member of the Senior Executive Service (SES) and CxO with experience spanning across four Departments and Agencies, Steve Grewal is intimately familiar with the depth and breadth of the threats that the U.S. government faces. It’s this knowledge and experience that makes him an impeccable choice to serve on our board, and we are confident that his participation will only strengthen our support to our federal clients.”

Grewal has also served at the chief information security officer (CISO) at ED. As CISO for a Cabinet-level Department, he was responsible for implementing the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) requirements including developing, maintaining and continually enhancing a nationwide cybersecurity program. He has held other senior leadership and technical posts at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).

“Every year, we see an increase in sophisticated cyberthreats to U.S. organizations, and digital assets of our government are no exception. Unfortunately, due to the known lag in modernization and technology usage in the public sector, government organizations are even more vulnerable,” said Steve Grewal. “That’s why it’s critical to establish best practices for mitigating known threats to federal organizations and to work hard at identifying new ones. As these threats continue to evolve, we can be confident that we’re providing the strongest defense to our national interests.”

Prior to entering federal service, Grewal spent several years in private industry including Ernst & Young, MicroStrategy, and a series of startups. He has an extensive background in strategic planning, technology innovation, program management, enterprise architecture, governance and cybersecurity in the public and private sectors.

Some of the Exabeam solutions that Grewal will provide advisory services for include Exabeam Threat Hunter for Federal Agencies, which enables analysts to proactively search for and respond to adversaries on the network, or insider threats. Other topics include adhering to the National Insider Threat Policy (NITP), established by former President Barack Obama in 2012.

Other members of the Exabeam Federal Advisory Board include Robert Lentz, president, Cybersecurity Strategies, and former CISO for the U.S. Department of Defense; Maj. Gen. (Ret.) John Maluda, former director of cyberspace transformation and strategy in the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force, and CIO; and Pete Tseronis, CEO, Dots and Bridges LLC, and former CTO for the U.S. Department of Energy.
