The New CISO Podcast Episode 28: Making the Leap from Engineering to Cybersecurity Leadership

This episode sees Steve speak with David Rule, first-time CISO who, prior to this, had a more technical role.

David shares his experiences in making the move, the tools that helped him along the way; as well as how he thinks his technical background plays to his advantage in executive management.

Trusting your team to keep the wheels turning when you transition into executive management

Moving from a purely engineering role into executive management can be daunting, especially when you consider that you won’t be able to do both at the same time. That’s where trusting your technical team comes in, and in this episode we talk about what that might look like and how it empowers you as a leader.

Steve and David also talk about:

  • The difference between a good CISO and a great CISO
  • Different metrics for different CISOs
  • Crisis management training
  • Customer relationship management and,
  • Managing administrative rights for nontechnical managers
